Welcome to Carnival Country
Before you get your hopes up, no there’s not actually a place called Carnival Country; although it’s starting to feel like there is with the clown that was elected President of the United States in November of 2016.
You may be wondering how a joker such as Donald Trump could have possibly acquired the most powerful position in the world, and you’re not alone. The reality is that we’re living in a world that’s run by memes, and right now Donald Trump is the biggest meme out there. He and his rodeo of political buffoons have been utilizing social media to manipulate the minds of the public.
If you’ve been on your phone or computer within the past couple of years, it’s probably no surprise that Trump’s name has been spread around like the common cold. Especially in the days leading up to the election, you couldn’t turn on the news without seeing another Donald Trump scandal. Surprisingly enough though, all of the negative publicity thrown at him was actually very beneficial for his campaign. By posting controversial tweets and having his scandals shared on Facebook and various other media platforms, Trump became known as a terrifying joke all around the world. With all of his racist remarks and ridiculous promises, it’s no surprise that people voted for him just to see what happens.
After the major success of Trump’s campaign, a few other celebrities have since announced their intention to run for president in the upcoming election. In August of 2016 during the Video Music Awards (VMA), Kanye West announced in his speech that he will be running for President in 2020. That’s right ladies and gentlemen, we are now living in an episode of South Park. However, there is a bright side to this celebrity circus of an election. Some of the big names that have considered running actually seem like they would be pretty decent candidates. In December of 2017 during an Ellen DeGeneres interview, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson also expressed serious interest in running in the next election. The following month, Oprah Winfrey put her name in the running during her Golden Globe speech. It won’t be long until the American government turns into a reality TV show.
Even though all of these big name presidential announcements are huge, it seems like this publicity stunt has started to wear out. One of the reasons Donald Trump’s campaign was so impactful was because people were looking for a change. The idea of having a celebrity as president instead of your average political candidate was a completely new concept, and one that had lots of people wondering. Unfortunately, it seems like the shock factor has reached its peak and the element of surprise is not as effective anymore. This means it’s unlikely that the reconcilers that are planning on running in 2020 will be able to utilize social media the way Trump did. It’s tough to say who will actually pull through with their intentions, but it’s looking like the 2020 election is going to be a celebrity rat race.
