With today’s evolving world of social media, many focus on the way they look on social media and try to find ways to to boost their online identity. Social media is no doubt a great way to develop strategies in order to help develop a business and a beneficial tool to gain popularity. Social media metrics allow for business progress and when that success is earned, the self- value of the company will also begin to rise. But what happens when we take the metrics of our business personally, how does that affect how we view ourselves. I believe that when people see their metrics have positive statistics, it does boost their self-esteem, as they have provided much effort with getting those metrics to what they are. The work we produce is a reflection of ourselves and so of course self-worth would be affected as what is being shown on social media is a reflection of us, which is being received in a positive way.

Although a good response on social media can help with self-worth, it is important that this is not the only source of that. In a way, social media metrics are allowing other people to determine our own self-value. For example, if you post a picture on Instagram, and it receives less amount of likes that one is used to, we will obviously take that personally, believing that we are not as relevant as we once were. But if a picture gets a lot of likes it is validation that we are worth a lot and boosts our socio-economic status. When you google the definition of value it comes up as,“ the regard that something is held to deserve; the important, worth, or usefulness of something”. What these social media metrics are allowing us to do is think that they only way we will gain value is by how much we are worth to other people. Sometimes this may be a good thing, if you are able to gain a positive platform by using metrics, you can create value for your company and allows you to spread a positive message to all of your followings. But I believe that self-worth is more important as if you are able to have enough self-esteem then that will benefit your company more because you will focus less on yourself and put more energy into your company.

Obviously business’s must value the power of social media metrics. This a tactic that allows to know what works for you company and what doesn’t. It also gives you the power a build a platform and gain a following. Carelessly valuing social media metrics means that you may start focusing on your personal self-value with the statistics found instead of having the best interest of your company. When this starts to happen then your business may diminish as everyone is putting their personal value first. And although you should put your value and self-worth first, also always keep in mind how this will affect the bigger picture.
