Bridging Reflection and Action
Dear Descendant,
As we conclude Ramadan and embrace the joy of Eid al-Fitr, I am reminded of the seeds of reflection we planted at the beginning of this sacred month, inspired by the idea of ‘Deep Time’ and the Seventh Generation Practice. This practice, rooted in the awareness of our interconnectedness with past and future generations, aligns profoundly with the essence of Ramadan — a time for deep introspection, renewal, and commitment to living a life of purpose and compassion.
The Quran, with its emphasis on community and stewardship, and the teachings of the Prophet Mohammad encourage us to live with awareness of our impact on the earth and its inhabitants, calling us to act justly, to extend kindness, and to tread lightly on this planet.
As we step forth from Ramadan, it is incumbent upon us to weave these lessons into the fabric of our daily lives. The Work That Reconnects asks us to engage joyously and courageously in the healing of our world, to see ourselves as agents of change in the great turning towards a more sustainable and compassionate future.
To the generations alive in my time: Let this Eid be a catalyst for embodying the values we have nurtured during Ramadan. Let us commit to actions that honour the sacred balance of life, reconnect us with the earth, fostering harmony within ourselves, our communities, and the natural world. May we strive together to leave a positive legacy for the generations to come.
To you, my descendant, seven generations into the future: I hope that the actions we take today sow the seeds for a world in which you can thrive — one that cherishes diversity, practices gratitude, and upholds the sanctity of all life. Know that in every prayer, in every fast, and in every act of kindness, we are mindful of you and the inheritances we leave behind. You were wanted long before you were born.
Eid Mubarak. May our actions today contribute to the healing and flourishing of the generations of all forms of life that will follow.
