Here in Mumbai, India we are pretty much in the same place today in 2021, as we were in 2020 — in a lockdown that is getting increasingly severe. Only, this time last year, we had around 10 million labourers stranded on the roads, trying to walk to their rural homes across state boundaries. Some of them walked for weeks on end, well over 1000 kms. A lot of them did not make it. This year, the news reports state that the labourers went back home early, as soon as they sensed we were getting back into a lockdown. They had learnt their lesson: their urban employers would not take care of them in a moment of need.

The Shahada says all around us, everything and everyone, is life, and every individuated being is a messenger, an expression, of that reality. We are one united being. Though in this moment, we seem to suffer from amnesia about that unity. I wonder how the Prophet Mohammed would guide us if he were to exist today. He spent his life uniting warring tribes and creating a new civilization. In a civilization that is on the verge of collapse as we are today, we would do well to remember his lessons.

How did you contribute to civilization today?

Ramadan Kareem. May we emanate kindness through our thoughts, words and deeds.
