A Platform For Purpose

What is HUB Birmingham to me?

My HUB journey began a few years ago, when on a trip to Zagreb I happened to arrange a meeting with the HUB over there. The conversations I had, the people I met and the things I learned opened my eyes to a new way of working and a new way to approach work. Fast forward a few years and I was very lucky to see a tweet inviting people down to London for a HUB tour — so I responded and a few days later I was on the 5.29 from New Street and at the beginning of a very exciting journey.

The HUB tour was an energising experience — the way the different spaces combined with the different ideas of their inhabitants was very interesting to see. All the people in the HUBs were strongly purpose driven in many different ways, yet the HUB gave a sense of movement to all of their different purposes — it became a platform for these purposes to take shape, form and ultimately have impact in the world around them. For me this is the key point of the HUB — it is a space were purpose, passion and people combine to produce disruptive and innovative actions and results. At the end of the tour, on the 14.43 train out of Euston, I knew this was a journey I didn’t want to end.

In Birmingham the rapid development of the HUB — as a community and a concept has astonished me. FutureShift Festival, and the emergence of the Civic Foundry, have been revolutionary in opening people’s eyes to real life examples (from around the world) of purpose driven individuals and communities being successful. They have shown people that it is definitely possible to transform their purpose in to something tangible which can achieve civic change, satisfy their drivers and pay the bills. It is now HUB Birmingham’s role to provide a platform so that these people harness their purposes, generate a common energy and have a real and lasting impact in Birmingham.

We are creating a platform for the purpose economy in Birmingham to launch from. Now is the ideal time for people to bring their purposes together and to help shape the space, community and feel of the HUB.
