To American fans, Premier League team nicknames are all at once surprising, confusing, amusing and even offensive. Here is a quick guide to some of the nicknames in the BPL. To the average Brit, this may seem unnecessary.
The average Brit is unsurprised by a team named Sheffield Wednesday. The lads all met on Wednesdays to play and practice after all. To the average footie fan in Britain, it makes perfect sense to name your team after the place and day you are available for matches. Yes of course, it makes perfect sense.
The average Brit is thinking this is normal, but Americans scratch their heads immediately upon hearing there is a club named Sheffield Wednesday. At first, one could be excused for thinking this an outlier and a relegated club anyway. For example, Americans won’t be surprised by the Derby County Rams or the Hull City Tigers.
