Michigan beat Rutgers, 20–13, last season. It’s unlikely they would be permanent rivals in the future.

The Big Ten is discussing eliminating its geographic divisions, instead assigning each team three permanent rivals and rotating the other opponents through so that teams play each other at least once home and away every four years.

It’s a good idea, and below how I would assign each team’s permanent rivals. Let me know what you think in the comments.

Rutgers — Maryland, Northwestern, Penn State

Maryland — Rutgers, Indiana, Nebraska

Penn State — Michigan State, Ohio State, Rutgers

Ohio State — Michigan, Penn State, Illinois

Michigan — Ohio State, Michigan State, Minnesota

Indiana — Purdue, Maryland, Michigan State
