Sometimes, ‘ok’ is good enough
The Internet is a weird place at New Year
Packed with public declarations of what we like, love, hate, would and wouldn’t change about ourselves or our lives. Boldly sharing goals and plans, big or small, all with huge meaning to the sharer.
Having just enjoyed a social media free Christmas, reinstalling all of my apps on January 1st has sent my anxiety levels sky high. I haven’t really got any goals. I don’t want to change anything, does that mean I lack motivation? Does that mean I am not a ‘proper’ runner?
I actually feel very lucky to have everything that I do. My New Years Day plans were to be stringent with food and tidy the house, put away the piles of new toys, hoover the tinsel bits out of the carpets. But getting up and seeing the endless stream* of ‘New Year, New You’ in my feed helped me change my mind. Instead, I took the kid for a ride on his scooter, we shared a hot chocolate, and watched Ghostbusters for the millionth time this week.
See, 2018 brings much more than personal goals, but some big changes for my tiny family too. The boy turns 5 and is starting swimming lessons soon, and myself and the husband are finally finishing our renovation project after 10+ years and having the downstairs of our house completely remodelled. All that plus some exciting projects at work. I am fitting a couple of ultramarathons in around all of this, but feel quite relaxed about it because, compared to the other ‘real life’ stuff going on, it’s really not that important.
In 2017 I ran my first marathon, then had life changing surgery, then my son started school. I think that’s enough, really.
So although this year I want to do well, I don’t need to be better. It is more important to just do the things I love, with the people I care about.**
*Have to admit, there isn’t as much out there as in previous years, but it still gives me the heebie jeebies.
** Man, I am getting pretty wise.
