Eliud Kipchoge is arguably the greatest runner alive. He holds the official world record for the marathon at 2:01:39, and out of the 13 official marathons that he’s run, he has won 11 of them.

Kipchoge is also the only person to ever break two hours in an unofficial marathon. This massive feat is already motivating the next generation of runners. If you need some inspiration for your next run, check out these five great quotes by him:

“Athletics is not so much about the legs. It’s about the heart and mind.”

One of the main ideas behind Kipchoge’s running philosophy is that sports are more mental than physical. Even as amateur runners, it’s important for us to remember how much our attitude contributes to our success. When I have a rough day, I try to run with the mindset that running is a privilege, rather than an obligation.

Developing a positive mindset will yield real, tangible improvements in your running, and Kipchoge is proof. He credits his positivity with leading the way to his success.

“Only the disciplined ones in life are free. If you are undisciplined, you are a slave to your moods and your passions.”
