This week marks the official start of summer!

Warmer conditions, longer days, and that familiar urge for runners to get out and make the most of the beautiful weather. However, summer presents a unique set of challenges. The heat and humidity can quickly deplete your energy and turn your planned run into a struggle. But don’t worry! With the right approach and a few key strategies, you can transform your summer runs into an invigorating experience leaving you feeling more energized. This quick guide shares some tips and tricks to help you navigate the specific demands of summer running, and ensure that you make the most of every kilometer you conquer.

1. Beating the Heat: Hydration is Key

Here in Calgary, it feels like there are only two seasons — winter and summer. There is no in-between. A couple of weeks ago it was snowing, so the transition to summer running feels fairly drastic.

Unlike winter running where dehydration can creep up on you unnoticed, summer’s heat makes fluid loss readily apparent. Sweating is more constant, and thirst can hit you mid-run. Proper hydration is key throughout the day, not just before and after your run.
