Mt Fuji Was Crossed Off My Bucket List
Running and hiking Fuji-San offseason
Mount Fuji is probably the most known landmark in Japan. The active volcano is the roof of the Japanese territory at 3776m high.
Fuji San, as it is called by locals, is one of the 3 sacred mountains of Japan and a busy pilgrimage site.
If you ever come to Japan, you will recognize Fuji-San from as far as Tokyo and will smile when you see it.
Old Memories
I grew up in a tropical country. No snow or high mountains. Fuji-San is as present in my childhood memories as my grandparents’ house.
In the '90s, my mother moved to Japan. In her first visit to us back in Brazil, she said that she had climbed Mt Fuji with other relatives. They video recorded it. I watched that video over and over as it became a memory of my mother who was living on the other side of the world.
Living in Japan
Since I decided to live here, Fuji-San was added to my bucket list. There were excuses for it all the time.
” I am too fat!”, ” I don’t know anyone to go with me…”, ” I don’t have time or money for group climbing… ”
Truth is that I was scared! I never thought I was able to walk up to the top!
