Overcoming That “BLAH” Feeling After Your Big Race

No matter how long you’ve been running, this feeling will always hit you after a big race

Collapsed in a heap trying to get some sleep after the big race at the airport. Picture taken by my forever girlfriend when she stole my phone.

Two weeks after my significant turning 60 race at Six Days in the Dome, my body felt good, but I couldn’t unstick my mind and emotions. It felt like I was trapped in a strange place between planning for the race and trying to figure out what was next.

My wife was concerned about me; she thought I was weirding out on her, and quite frankly, I was worried.

Then, I suddenly remembered that this was a normal feeling and it was okay to feel, but I needed to figure out how to get back on track mentally.

If you’ve ever run a big race you targeted for what seemed like forever, you’ve most likely been here, too. Some people never get unstuck from this feeling, and the surest sign is that they are on Ultrasignup trying to find the next big thing. Whereas that may be one answer, the best answer is something else entirely.

Our lives, especially the 90+% of runners who don’t run to finish on the podium, are not supposed to be centered on “the event.”
