Last weekend, over 50,000 runners converged on the streets of Berlin to take part in the 50th anniversary of the Berlin Marathon.

A total of 54,062 to be exact.

This is far more runners than have ever participated in the Berlin Marathon, and it’s just barely enough to give Berlin the crown as the world’s largest marathon — for now.

In anticipation of the race, I analyzed 25 years' worth of data to tell some of the history of the Berlin Marathon. And today, I’m going to walk through an analysis of the results of this year’s race to see what else we can learn.

So let’s dive in.

Note: These unofficial results were originally collected from the Berlin Marathon website on Tuesday, October 1. I re-collected the results on Friday, October 4, and there were nine additional results. The demographic data is based on the original data collection, and the analysis of times is based on the latest data collection.
