There Is Nothing Special About Me as a Runner
An everyday runner’s journey
My story as a runner is pretty average, really.
I was active as a kid, quick on my feet, and could outrun my friends… well, most of them. But around 16, things got harder. Team sports like soccer, basketball, and rugby showed me I didn’t have that “natural talent” or resilience like others to push through those tough training sessions; I’d get tired, slow down, lose interest, and then stop altogether.
Still, I managed to stay active throughout my 20s, I switched from team sports to solo activities, I ran local races — did alright, and found myself toeing the line at some half-marathons. But for a while, I was just going through the motions, not really passionate, not really improving, and not sure where my interest really lay with the sport. It wasn’t until I realized you can be an average runner and still find a way to win.
And that’s my story today.
I’m Nothing Special, but Then Again, You Don’t Have to Be
I used to think that only exceptional runners crossed the finish line first.
I thought you needed to be a natural-born athlete, blessed with the perfect runner’s build, a podium finish on your resume, and a running YouTube…
