What if You Found a Body While Running?

I have run for 48 years and never encountered a dead body. At least not a human one. I was a detective for 26 years, though, and every dead body that I investigated was discovered by someone. Have you ever thought about that? Has it ever occurred to you that someday you might be running along and notice a peculiar odor and look in the direction of that odor only to see a motionless body lying there?

Ok, so that thought hasn’t occurred to you. I get it. Most people don’t want to think about things like that. But if you did run up on a body, would you know what to do? Some of you will say, “Of course I know what to do. Run as fast as I can in the opposite direction!” And that may not be a bad plan. But it may not be the best either. Let’s consider the possibilities.

First, where might you encounter a body? The answer is pretty much anywhere except running on a treadmill in a gym. I have known of bodies being found on remote trails, wooded areas along rural roads, and in more urban environments. It is probably more common than you think to find bodies on the fringes of parks, industrial areas, and alleyways.

If you come across a body, your first instinct may very well be to just run on. After all, this is not the type of thing that happens on a regular basis…
