When to Push: A Runner’s Guide to Finding Your Race Rhythm

Applying the rule of thirds to your race to help set a personal record

I was recently catching up with a friend over coffee, chatting about a few of my upcoming races, and that age-old question: PR or bust? As the conversation shifted to specific races, the inevitable question popped up, “So, when exactly do you crank it up a notch?” — his words, not mine.

Here’s the thing, I’ve developed a general rule that works for me, but it’s not a one-size-fits-all situation. It aims for a negative split (the last half faster than the first) versus max effort throughout the full race.

However, races vary based on distance, terrain, and even the weather. This rule is more like a trusty guideline for those times you’re feeling strong and aiming for a new personal best.

The key for me? The rule of thirds.
