Why You Need to Kill Your Ego To Become a Faster Runner
Who doesn't want to run fast? It's the natural desire of any runner. For some, especially beginners, it's all they do in every workout. But without a proper base underneath, such repetitive intense efforts usually lead to a running plateau or even worse — injuries and overtraining.
In order to become a faster runner, you need to build a body that can sustain those fast paces. And for that, you need to be patient, slow down, and set your ego aside for a while.
Logging a lot of easy miles may, at first, seem the opposite of what you should be doing but that's the price you pay to boost your speed and improve as a runner.
Many people start their running journey with the motto, “go hard or go home.” They feel like a workout where they haven't broken a sweat or gone out of breath at least for a bit is a total waste of time.
When I started running ten years ago, I had the same mindset. I would go for a 5k run a few times a week and try to crash my PB every single time. I couldn't allow myself to go slower and get disappointed with my result.
I had to feel proud of myself.
And why not? My performance kept improving and I felt incredibly strong and powerful. I even managed to run my first 10k and beat my time a few months later…
