Why Your Training is Plateauing

Remember the feeling of being a new runner? Every workout resulted in a personal record. Your first time marathon training, every weekend’s long run was a new “longest run” for you. Each day was exciting, faster, stronger than the day before.

Eventually, that success wasn’t as consistent.

When you first start any new habit, big gains are made at the beginning. When you go from knowing zero about a subject to having a basic understanding, it completely changes your perspective on the subject. If you didn’t know a lick of French, and then you worked through a beginner's book, you’d have a basic understanding of the language and a few phrases up your sleeve. After that point, every new conjugation and bit of slang will have you more proficient. However, nothing will be quite like the thrill of your first few months, where you go from zero to ordering a drink at a café.

Training often looks like a roller coaster. You start by moving up up up, slowly and steadily. Once you hit a certain point, the fun starts. Throughout the ride, however, there are ups, downs, twists, turns, new peaks, and low valleys.
