You know the statistics are grim. Just go and search Google for “New Year’s Resolution statistics”. Or, better yet, examine your own history of intention around the changing of the year. Maybe you don’t even bother anymore. I mean, who wants to start a New Year by breaking promises they made to themselves? Where’s the “feel good” in that?

But starting the New Year afresh with bright eyed enthusiasm for the infinite possibilities ahead has appeal doesn’t it? Why should we resist that appeal, those endless opportunities just because it didn’t work out before? Maybe the idea isn’t flawed. Just the execution.

If we could just lay the infinite possibilities to one side for a moment, there are real practical reasons why doing this kind of self-reflection and goal setting at Christmas and New Year work. We have some clear time to think- the hustle of the rest of the year quiets for a few days as a minimum, probably quite a bit longer. We are, if we are lucky, surrounded by our loved ones which can serve as a reminder, another reason, for you to strive to be the best you you can be.
