Booklet — Building change within the South
PROCASUR Corporation is a not-for-profit, international organization established in 1999 to improve the quality of public and private investments on sustainable rural development, including the rural people organizations’s contribution to the development of vulnerable territories.
Today PROCASUR operates in Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa, and Asia with regional and subregional offices in Chile (HQ), Colombia, Italy, Senegal, Kenya, and Thailand. We believe that knowledge is power and that by fostering homegrown solutions and enabling knowledge sharing platforms, it is possible to reduce poverty and the gender gap, while gaining environmental balance.
Our organization is recognized as global leader in linking capacity building, inclusive learning and innovation with sustainable rural development to address the needs of the most vulnerable population: women, youth, indigenous and afro-descendant people. PROCASUR serves as a learning hub for local to international institutions and a bridge for inclusive communication among rural people, development practitioners, the private sector, and policy-makers.
Why betting on local knowledge for sustainable rural development?
Local knowledge reflects the wisdom and know-how accumulated by the experience of many generations and continuous adaptation of external knowledge to solve problems. Knowledge is a key component in the social capital of rural communities as they seek control over their own development. Local educational services such as farmer-to-farmer training and technical assistance are effective strategies for reducing intermediation costs, increasing grassroots access to services opportunities, and strengthening the institutional capacities that provide sustainability towards investments.
