Job Posting Teardown: Huge
When it comes to user experience — Huge does it big. Huge is an experience design and full service digital marketing agency that transforms brands by building best-in-class unified brand experiences to foster meaningful relationships with users.
What stood out to me most about Huge (and the reason why I’m doing this teardown) is the fact that their careers page is a perfect representation of the philosophy of unified brand experience. Huge keeps it simple but still leaves a bold, impactful impression that really sets a unique stage for a valuable candidate experience.
Let’s see how they do it.
From the very start, Huge offers a full-screen experience with a hilarious culture video at the very top of the fold. I wish I could find the link for this video because it’s one of the best culture videos I’ve seen. It’s a montage of short video clips that are taken by employees. There’s people ninja-kicking, there’s a dude breaking a laptop over his knee, there’s plenty of dogs, there’s even an office killer whale. This is really awesome because it offers an “inside look” of all the great people that make Huge a great place to work. It’s not corny, it’s not staged, and it’s completely relatable for candidates.
A lot of the time careers pages try to do a little too much. They are often clouded with a lot of information and content and have way too many calls-to-action. It’s overwhelming, and doesn’t offer a streamlined experience for candidates who are there to learn about the organization, and apply if they are a fit. Huge is on the complete opposite end of this spectrum and keeps their careers page simple and bold. They immediately sell the candidate on why Huge is a standout employer, and offer a very simple and streamlined candidate experience.
I noticed that there isn’t really that much to do on the Huge careers page — which I think very much by intended design. I would have definitely liked to have seen Huge use their careers page to flex some of their interactive “unified brand experience” for candidates.
I love this sentence: “We give [our teams] the freedom to make things that matter, working alongside colleagues they respect”. It really speaks to the types of creative and entrepreneurial-minded candidates they are looking to hire.
With the theme of keeping things short and sweet, Huge provides 5 insights into the way that they work. Again, I wish they took this a step further and flexed their creative design in a way that was a bit more engaging and interactive for candidates — but I can’t knock them for the impactful copy.
Let’s click apply…
Now this is where Huge takes their careers page to the moon. On their apply page they have no job postings whatsoever. Seriously. When I talk about a differentiated, standout candidate experience — this is it. This video feature is really, really cool for a couple reasons. The first reason is that it puts the candidate in the front seat of their experience. Huge is clearly looking for a certain type of person to work at their organization, and they are asking their candidates to put their best foot forward by taking a video and talking about why they are great, and what they care about.
Which brings me to the second reason why this is cool. It’s completely all about fit. I can only imagine the jump in quality of their inbound candidates from this page. I completely agree. Resumes and cover letters are just smoke. They have no real place anymore if you’re looking for experience-based hires over skilled-based hires, and Huge understands that candidates shouldn’t be defined by their resumes. If a resume is a few words, and a picture says 1000 words. Think about asking your candidates to send a video of themselves talking about why they do what they love says…
This easily one of the best application forms I’ve ever seen on a careers page. If you don’t choose to send in a video. You simply upload your CV, and you choose your area of expertise, where you’re open to working and that’s it. No extra inputs. No talent communities. Huge will find where you fit best based on video (or CV). I know a major complaint from the candidate perspective is that applications take too long, and feel too clunky. Huge keeps it very simple, and makes it very easy for their candidates to apply. They’ll even do the hard work of finding your best fit. Well done Huge, well done.
What Huge does really well is offer their candidates a simple, bold and unique candidate experience. They put their job seekers in the drivers seat and ask them to put their best foot forward because they are focused on finding the best right-fit candidates. The only thing I wish they did was provide more of an interactive experience that demonstrated some of their creative design capabilities. That being said, hats off to Huge for offering a really interesting and differentiated experience on their careers page.
