Back to the Turntable
This summer has reignited my love of music. My wonderful new girlfriend purchased a turntable and we’ve been enjoying my old collection and her growing new one together over the past months, and it’s really been special.
Turning her onto Dylan (Nashville Skyline, Blonde on Blonde, etc…), Steely Dan (Aja), or Sufjan (Carrie & Lowell, Seven Swans) has been a joy. Likewise she’s brought new music into my life, Angel Olsen (MY WOMAN), Car Seat Headrest (Teens of Denial).
We’ve argued over the importance of old favorites, Kanye (Yeezus vs My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy), Fiona Apple, and Joanna Newsom.
But in each spin on the turntable, or car ride aux battle, we get to know each other better. I think back to when I was dj’ing in my early twenties, and how much I just wanted to hear, and it has been unlike that for years.
We visit our local Guitar Center, and I took her on a tour of Baltimore via record stores (True Vine, Celebrated Summer). We discovered Red Onion on a brunch trip into D.C. I would not trade a single of those moments, for a better time anywhere else.
Where has music taken you lately? Have you really let the record spin for you in a moment?
