An article explanation of specialty pharmacy in a nutshell

From start to finish, this article was comprehensive, thorough and surprisingly detailed. Gordon J. Vanscoy an Executive Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer, did an amazing job at shedding light on a career path that has been quietly making a big impact in the pharmacy profession since the 1980. Further supporting another reason why we should be recognized as providers by now —go figure!!!

Since pursuing pharmacy a few years ago, I had the slightest clue of how many roles existed for pharmacist. It wasn’t until a couple of course in that I realized the wide opportunities that lay ahead. The article even went as far as outlining the necessary continued education courses as well as mentioning that a knowledgeable pharmacist will have had some sort of residency and fellowship in the specialty of their choosing.

The article even mentioned a cost benefit analysis on how if a patient receiving specialty medications is properly managed can save insurance companies money and reduce the risk of patients developing resistance or rejection of an organ.

Another important point made in the article was cost. Compliance or medication adherence are crucial factors to consider. Managing an illness can be expensive and a burden to the patient if they don’t have adequate healthcare coverage. This in turn will cause an issue with patients adhering to drug therapies. Further increasing morbidity and mortality. Specialty pharmacies can assist with patient securing third-party coverage.

Overall, I’m pleased to have stumbled across this article. It made for an easy and quick read that touched on so many surfaces surrounding an ever-growing career path that most aren’t too familiar with the term let alone what actually takes place within these type of sectors.

Thanks for reading.

Be well, stay safe
