The stars are not integral parts of the club’s emblem. In fact, they are overlapped insignias in the team’s flag and uniform, applied as distinctions set forth in the club’s Bylaws.

The gold (or yellow) stars have been added since 1952 upon each mark, Olympic or world title of sports deemed Olympic. The 2000 bylaws reform instituted the red stars, which correspond to Club World Cup or equivalent titles.

Thus the three red stars in São Paulo FC’s Sacred Mantle represent world titles conquered by the team in 1992, 1993 and 2005, while the two gold stars honor the world triple jump records achieved by Adhemar Ferreira da Silva in 1952 (Helsinki Olympics) and 1955 (Mexico City Pan American Games).

Initially, the use of stars was restricted to the Official Flag and amateur sports uniforms. Only after 1996, Adhemar Ferreira da Silva’s stars were also depicted in professional football uniforms. In 2000, the recently-implemented red stars referring to the 1992 and 1993 Club World Cup Championships became part of Tricolor’s flag and uniform. The third Club World Cup title star was added in January 2006.
