Cadillac Moon

Fausto and Mariposita were whipping Fausto’s black ’88 Cadillac Fleetwood around the moon, peeping the groovy scenery, the trippy moon rock formations, the jet black cosmic roof sprinkled with crazy stars, the earth hanging stupidly in the sky like a big pimple.

They were chill wandering, zig-zagwise, not a goal or intention in sight, pure egoless reception. The radio was playing Thelonious Monk’s rendition of “Meet Me Tonight in Dreamland.”

“Can the blind see?” Fausto asked Mariposita.

“Yeah,” said Mariposita.

“Are all men blind?”

“Yeah.”

“What about women?”

“All women have one eye.”

“What about butterflies?”

“Butterflies themselves are eyes.”

“What is the difference between a woman’s eye and the sun?”

“The moon.”

“OK, now you ask me a question.”

“Do you love me?”

“Yeah.”

They drove on for a while, Billie Holiday was singing “Blue Moon” on the radio. She was right, the moon really was blue. So was Fausto’s Cadillac now.

Then “Green Onions” by Booker T. and the M.G.’s came on the radio and the Cadillac turned green.
