At one point, back in 2015, there was no question Quigg was one of the better fighters in boxing’s lower weight classes.

However, after a hard-fought split-decision loss to Carl Frampton in 2016, Quigg has gone 4–1, dealt with some injuries and absence from the ring. He’s struggled to get back to a championship level and he hasn’t fought since October 2018.

He’ll face the skilled Carroll in his return bout. Carroll doesn’t have a tone of power. While he has compiled a 17–1–1 professional record, only three of his wins have come by KO. That explains the insulting nickname Quigg gave him during the build-up for Saturday’s fight (Feather Fists).

Carroll will have to be especially slick and smart to overcome Quigg whose aggression will only be augmented by an opponent who cannot hurt him.

If Quigg wins impressively you’d have to think he’s back in the mix for a title shot at super featherweight. Because him and current IBF champion Joseph Diaz are both signed with DAZN, that might be his best option for a title shot.

The 31-year-old Quigg, a former titleholder at 122 pounds, has been out of action since Oct. 2018, suffering a pair of elbow injury setbacks in 2019, one of which canceled his original December date with the 27-year-old Carroll, a scrappy and colorful former world title challenger from Dublin.

Both fighters have talked plenty ahead of this fight and have guaranteed a win. Our staffers like the fight for action potential, and it should be a fight worth tuning in to see. It’s really notable for both guys; a win here could be a step back to the world title scene, a loss is a big setback.

The rest of the card will feature returns for Hughie Fury, Jack Cullen, and Anthony Fowler, plus Zach Parker taking on Rohan Murdock in a super middleweight eliminator.

Main Card (DAZN, 2:00 pm ET)
Scott Quigg (35–2–2, 26 KO) vs Jono Carroll (17–1–1, 3 KO), junior lightweights, 12 rounds
