Career Talk @ SAAAC
One of the questions we repeatedly ask ourselves at the SAAAC Autism Centre is “how do we enhance the volunteer experience?”. Many of our attempts at answering this question has led to developments to how volunteers engage with SAAAC within our facility. But this year, we wanted to invest in initiatives that would help volunteers outside the centr — growing not only as individuals but also as professionals.
In that spirit, we have developed Career Talk @ SAAAC — a speaker series that brings together professionals of all stripes to present their unique experiences, prespectives, struggles, and successes. Our intention is to support the growth of SAAAC Volunteers by bring together inspiring, interesting, innovative speakers to explore questions of career and self-development.
Our first talk will focus on Business & Law, and will include a host of professionals who are making an impact in their industries and communities.
Health Systems Engineer
Gobi is a Health Systems Engineer with over 10 years of healthcare experience, specifically working at large academic health sciences centers in Toronto, in addition to stints in finance, telecommunication and start-ups. He is particularly interested in innovative business models and technology to improve healthcare delivery.
Trained as an Industrial Engineer at the University of Toronto, he later completed a Masters of Health Administration, and is a Lean-Six Sigma Black Belt and Professional Engineer.
He is currently working at Salesforce as a Solution Engineer, helping healthcare and life sciences companies innovate on the Salesforce platform in order to enhance experiences for their patients and customers, while improving their top and bottom line growth
Director Partnerships, Automotive Finance @ RBC
Haran is a banking & finance professional with global management experience in Strategy, Accounting & Financial Analysis within the Financial Services industry.
He is currently the Director of Automotive Partnerships for RBC based in Toronto. In this role, he is responsible for managing relationships with RBC’s key automotive partners, with P&L responsibility for one of RBC’s automotive lending businesses. Prior to his current role, he was the Head of Financial Planning & Analysis for RBC’s Wealth Management business in Asia, based in Singapore. While in Singapore, he managed a team across Singapore, Hong Kong, and Switzerland to drive management reporting & provide portfolio insights and analytics to Wealth Management executives and sales teams in the region.
Haran largely credits his career & finding a passion in business to a failed professional soccer career and repeatedly underperforming on his Law School Admissions Test (LSAT).
He holds an MBA in International Business from the Ted Rogers School of Management at Ryerson University, and a Bachelors degree in business from the University of Western Ontario.
Director, Value Creation Services
Michael is a Director in Deloitte’s Value Creation Services group specializing in performance improvement and turnaround, revenue growth, cost reduction, operational restructuring, M&A execution and due diligence.
Michael is a hands-on practitioner that assists organizations to navigate the complexity of their business to quickly strategize, re-position and execute for growth and profitability.
Michael is experienced across a number of industries and has led several successful performance enhancement projects. Prior to joining Deloitte, Michael was the Canadian practice leader for Business Performance Improvement for an advisory firm where he focused on developing the market place and building up the practice.
Associate at Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP
Gajan is an associate in Osler’s Competition and Foreign Investment Group. Gajan’s practice covers all areas of competition/antitrust, foreign investment and international trade.
He has advised domestic and international clients in a variety of industries on competition law matters as well as matters related to the Investment Canada Act. Gajan also advises multinational and domestic businesses on international trade policy, international trade strategies, and market-access concerns, including export and import controls and trade remedies, such as anti-dumping, countervailing and safeguard measures.
Gajan graduated from McGill Law School and completed his undergraduate degree in Systems Design Engineering at the University of Waterloo. Prior to law school, Gajan worked as a technology consultant for Accenture Inc.
North America, Field Marketing and Training Manager @ De’Longhi
A graduate of St. Michael’s Choir School and Ryerson University’s business program, Graham has combined his love of performance and passion for education, finding unique ways to grow the business at some of the top technology and small appliance companies around.
From tech giant Toshiba, to the innovative global powerhouse, Dyson and now onto De’Longhi, the world leader in premium Espresso and Home Comfort, Graham has implemented trend setting Marketing and Sales strategies which have evolved both the traditional retail channel and television shopping networks across North America.
Associate Marketing Manager at HD Supply Facilities Maintenance
Kavitha is an accomplished marketing professional with broad B2B marketing experience, encompassing strategic planning, advertising, creative branding, direct marketing, budgeting and analytics.Her career has been with well known brands such as Weight Watchers Canada, General Motors and Staples Business Advantage.
In her current role as Marketing Manager for HD Supply, Kavitha is responsible for all marketing initiatives across Canada, by developing strategies and managing projects that continue to drive growth for the business.
She is the founder of saaACTIVE, an initiative started to help encourage communities to get active while raising funds for children at the SAAAC Autism Centre. In her spare time, Kavitha loves to play volleyball, travel and watch the Toronto Raptors.
Senior HR Advisor @ TD
Subashini Carunakaran is a seasoned HR Leader with 12 + years of experience working for varied corporate and professional services organizations globally including, TD Bank, Sun Life Financial, Celestica, KPMG and Deloitte where she has worked in various roles.
Subashini has experience in various facets of HR including talent development, change management, HR transformation and diversity and inclusion. She is a graduate of York University and an active mentor in the Canadian Tamil Professional Association and York Alumni association.
Outside of work, Subashini enjoys travelling and spending time with her two kids.
Student at Law
Rohan is a graduate of Windsor Law and just recently completed his articles in Northwestern Ontario. Rohan’s interest in working in rural and remote communities brought him to Thunder Bay for a Social Justice Fellowship in his second year of law school which subsequently led to his placement in Fort Frances, Ontario.
Prior to attending law school Rohan worked and volunteered at SAAAC in different capacities including facilitating workshops for parents and writing proposals for public and private granting programs.
With an avid interest in criminal and immigration law as well the emerging space of legal technology he has plans to join a firm that shares these interests or shape his own practice.
Rohan is currently waiting for his call to the bar.
