Does every day feel like Groundhog day?

You know the movie where Bill Murray wakes up every day and it’s exactly the same as the previous day? Sure at 1st it seems like fun. You enjoy the predictability and creating a new routine that’s fresh and exciting. All too quickly it becomes boring, annoying and eventually extremely irritating. SaaS is mostly about solving the same problem or need but at scale. So as a SaaS owner there is a significant risk of living the same day — over and over again.

“Don’t live the same year 75 times and call it a life.” ― Robin S. Sharma

It doesn’t have to be like this if you plan accordingly.

Which elements of the day do you love?

When you look at your daily routine, which aspects of it do you absolutely love? What things have you created that motivate and inspire you. Which are the healthy rituals that you have built into your groundhog day? Examples might be Meditation, a daily coffee out in the fresh air, writing a gratitude journal, having a planned deliberate blue sky thinking session. We sometimes forget that as business owners we should be the architects of our perfect day. So keep this in mind as you build the habits and workflows that support your business growth.

When are you most in flow?

Flow is the name given to an activity that you simply love doing. Something you are so involved in you often lose all perspective of time and sometime even location. You’re in the zone, the moment, and what you do feels effortless and your perception of time becomes distorted. An hour can feel like a minute. Follow the advice that you should be doing the tasks that you love. For many of us this is often a hobby like writing, reading, chess or rock climbing. On a professional level surgeons, athletes and even graphic designers all say that they often experience this flow and want to capture more of it, more of the time.

What can you change?

There are always annoying parts to everyone’s day. Things you just don’t like doing yet persist at and eventually (almost subconsciously) end up doing them again and again, over and over. If you feel like this s you then it’s time to get a little creative and look at ways to change or overcome these routines that may no longer work for you.

The Challenge

As your startup grows it’s is really important to stay connected to what you love to do and the right habits that will support your success. Anyone who thinks change in their routine or business is hard is potentially under-prepared for the start-up journey ahead, and may be doomed to live out their own Groundhog day — just like Bill Murray’s character Phil Connors.

Can you find just 1 thing you can begin to do differently to create a new routine, habit or an innovative way to keep you inspired and more in flow? Phil finally escaped his “loop” by becoming a more caring and compassionate person — what will your gift to the world be?
