Invest in Yourself

Along my professional path I have searched and read other developers stories about their experiences to understand if my thoughts were a symptom of madness or I’m in the right way.

I want share with you what I think about “Invest in yourself” mantra.

If you’re considering a change in your career it might be worth reading this story to find out if you’re the only one crazy or we’re at least two 😄.

Becoming a Laravel certified developer 2018 it was a small chance to think about myself and how “Investing on myself” is improving my professional life slowly but constantly.

I think seriously that now I could be in a very different reality if I continued on the old way.

When I have started my first job as software developer of course, it seamed that anything was good.

I’m graduated in Software Engeneering, my career has began in Ericsson one of the biggest technology company in the world. I left my home in Sicily and I moved to Naples one the best city in Italy.

Develop software application that other people use gave me always a very good feeling. As when I have developed a booking web app for football match reservations (I was a kid) and with my friends we imagined that the software would take control of the word by turning off the hot water during the shower … 😜

I was excited to be at work in Ericsson, I could not imagine how many things I would have learned… if I have to say the truth… nothing.

Since that day has begun the only part of my life where “I have stopped investing in myself”. The reality was completely different from my expectations. The doubts soon arrived.

The company was completely old. Old work tools, very high average age and a pyramid of managers who would have made a great impression in Egypt.

In two and a half years I have never heard “Design Pattern” and the best discussion on innovation was on a new smartphone bought by a colleague. 😤

After 12 months I ask to my boss: “Send me abroad”. And so it was, 6 months in Paris at Bouygues Telecom and then you see what you want to do.

Paris was a superb experience. Bouygues Telecom is a company with my peers managers with the goal to upgrade entire company infrastructure to the next level and Design Patterns, SOLID principles, UX became my daily bread 👌.

In a coffe break with Gregory (my team leader) I find out that the French are paying Ericsson 350 euros a day to work in Bouygues. 👹 👹 👹

“Certainly this value depends from Ericsson brand, but how much could I earn by selling my skills on my own?”

For the first time in a long time I have thought: “What can I give to the market? What can I do to find valuable solutions to the people’s pains?”

I’m back in Italy and I left Ericsson (re)starting my path from scratch. Now I’m owner of a software development firm in Italy that work with modern tools and methodologies to build great SaaS products and scalable business.

The meaning of this story is clear: “Invest in yourself”.
