What is COVID-19?
COVID-19 is an infectious disease. It is spreading quickly in many countries. This is because it is new, and people have not been able to build any immunity to it. COVID-19 is sometimes called coronavirus.
Most people who get COVID-19 will have a mild illness like a cold or flu. Some people will develop a more serious illness. About 1 in 5 people with COVID-19 will need to go to hospital. You are more likely to need treatment in hospital if you are aged over 60 years or if you have other health problems. If you have a condition such as diabetes, a heart problem, cancer or breathing problems, you are at extra risk.
There is no vaccine or treatment for COVID-19 yet. There are teams of scientists in many countries trying to find treatments, tests and vaccines. The best way to protect yourself and your family from COVID-19 is to stay home and wash your hands often using soap and water. If you sneeze or cough, cover your nose and mouth.
