Catch up on some quality couch-surfing time

Story by Amanda Recio

It’s 11 a.m. on a Tues. morning. You get up, walk over to the fridge and grab last night’s leftovers. As you heat them up you contemplate what to do with your day. There’s no school, and you have the closing shift at work today. Though the timer counting down to the first day of fall semester is ticking away, your mind is clearing thoughts of scantrons and brick hallways and replacing them with pictures of the beach, summer music festivals, and of course, guilt-free binge-watching on Netflix. Here are 5 heat-loving movies that are sure to awaken the summer in you.

1. Adventureland

What do you get when you mix a mid-80s theme park, secret love affairs, that one girl from the vampire movies, and a blazing hot east coast summer? It’s not a punchline, just a really underrated indie movie with a phenomenal cast. Jesse Eisenberg portrays the typical awkward youngster with an outlandish dream to go to Europe the summer before college. An unfortunate turn of events causes him to put his plans on hold so that he can get a job at a theme park, along the way meeting people who make him have a different summer experience he wasn’t expecting. The cast includes Kristen Stewart, Ryan Reynolds, Martin Starr, Bill Hader, and Kristen Wigg.

2. Crossroads

Fashion in the early 2000s is definitley laughable by today’s standards, but somehow seeing it on young Britney before people stopped leaving her alone feels like a major throwback to her “Oops! I did it again” days. Spears plays a recent high school graduate who wants to see her mom in Arizona, so she sets on a road trip with her two childhood friends to travel across the states to California, where she’s met with some unexpected news. Marvel at Zoe Saldana in a movie where she’s not wearing any oddly colored body makeup. The movie also features cameos from Dan Akroyd, Kim Cattrall, and Justin Long.

3. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

Even though Ferris Bueller’s infamous self proclaimed ditch day wasn’t anywhere near summer, you can live vicariously through Bueller’s undeniably epic day away from school. From the mannequin Ferris to dancing in downtown Chicago to “Twist & Shout” to reversing Camerons’ dad’s car out the window, this movie always gets you in a crazy mood to get up and do something different and fun.

4. The Benchwarmers

Even if baseball isn’t your thing, you’re sure to enjoy this one for the sheer fact that it is absolutely hilarious. David Spade, Jon Heder, and Rob Schneider star in what is probably the weirdest movie you will ever see about baseball. After encountering a group of baseball playing bullies, the three set out to show them up by creating a little league baseball tournament where the winner would get a brand new baseball stadium funded by a local billionaire. The three adults enter the tournament in order to show the neighboring teams to be nicer, and encounter problems when they realize that two of them cannot play the game. The cast also incudes Jon Lovitz, Molly Sims, and Tim Meadows.

5. 50 First Dates

In Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore’s second movie together, Sandler plays a marine veterinarian who falls in love with a local girl who suffers from short term memory loss due to an accident and doesn’t remember who he is on a daily basis. The movie’s island beach location alone makes you want to get up and take a drive along the coast. From the crystal clear waters to the sudden craving for spam and eggs, this movie is sure to get you into the summer mood with it’s impressive Hawaii backdrop and the island chemistry between Sandler and Barrymore.
