New Frozen Musical to Replace Aladdin at California Adventure in Anaheim
Disney California Adventure Park’s “Disney’s Aladdin — A Musical Spectacular” will be replaced with a “Frozen” inspired musical which will take stage at the Hyperion Theater in 2016.
“Disney’s Aladdin — A Musical Spectacular” has made its home at Disney California Adventure Park’s Hyperion Theater since its debut performance in January 2003 — which accounts to almost 14,000 shows.
“Frozen” has been making its way into Disney’s theme parks since the film reached popularity in 2013. Disney’s California Adventure Park has already provided “Frozen” fans with an indoor frozen playground called Olaf’s Snow Fest, along with an Anna and Elsa meet and greet. Now, the park is developing a theatrical production that will “immerse you in the world of ‘Frozen’ as never before, with elaborate costumes and sets, stunning special effects and surprising scenic transformations,” Shawn Slater, a blogger for the Disney Parks Blog, said.
Despite the success of “Frozen,” some fans are unhappy to see “Disney’s Aladdin — A Musical Spectacular” retire from the stage.
John J. Lewis, a 23-year-old Mt. SAC alumni and current creative writing major at the University of California, Riverside, has been a Disneyland annual passholder since 1997. He said it’s sad to see Alladin go.
“It’s sad to see an experience such as Aladdin leave the Disneyland property, but Disney knows what’s selling more than anyone, and although disheartened, I know it would be wrong for me to be completely mad,” Lewis said. “Preventing Frozen from becoming a show would dishearten a new generation, who might see ‘Frozen’ as their Aladdin.”
The final curtain call for “Disney’s Aladdin — A Musical Spectacular” will take place on Jan. 10, 2016.
