One Direction Releases Music Video for “History” and I’m Crying
When I woke up this morning, I went through my regular routine: I hit the snooze button on my alarm, cursed myself for taking a class of winter break and checked my social media pages. What I didn’t expect was to spend the hour I had before class in a panic-stricken sobfest over a music video featuring four boys. But that’s exactly what happened. It’s safe to say I didn’t feel the need to attend class today.
2015 was a big year for One Direction. They lost a member, performed 80 shows at various international stadiums on their “One The Road Again Tour,” released a new album called “Made In The A.M.,” and crushed our souls by announcing that they were going on a break.
After five years of non-stop touring, recording and rarely spending any time at their respective homes, Liam, Louis, Niall and Harry made a decision to go on a hiatus. It’s been 44 days since their last performance as One Direction for an unknown amount of time and there have been rumors of solo careers, numerous trips to luxurious destinations and Louis Tomlinson, 24, welcomed a baby boy into the world.
However, babies and solo careers are not the cause of the collective sea of tears flooding the One Direction fandom today. The band released their music video for their latest single, “History,” which was not only nostalgic and sentimental, but saddening since fans have no idea when, and if, the band will make a comeback.
The video chronicles the four boys, plus former member Zayn Malik, in their early X-Factor days, follows them through careers, includes clips from their music videos and shows the four boys in present-day singing and playing around.
As if the video couldn’t hit fans straight in the heart by revisiting memorable times in the bands career, the chorus of the song is definitely one to make anyone emotional over their favorite band going on a break.
You and me got a whole lot of history
We could be the greatest team that the world has ever seen
You and me got a whole lot of history
So don’t let it go, we can make some more, we can live forever
Elaine Farah, 18 year-old communications student at SUNY Geneseo, was one of a small group of fans that was able to go into the recording studio with Niall Horan and One Direction’s friend, songwriter and producer, Julian Bunetta, to record a part of the chorus for the song. “Being lucky enough to be apart of the song was one thing that I will never get over or forget and watching those flashbacks to day one, to the moment everything changed for them amd for me, really hit home.”
Farah added, “I owe everything to them: my best friendships have started beside of these boys, my happiest memories have been because of them, I’ve been able to call stadiums home for a couple hours at every show I’ve gotten to attend. Watching all of that on screen in a three minute video backed by a song that means SO MUCH to me and to all of us as fans just makes me happy to live this life — Best life ever.”
Amy Straitt, 21-year-old fashion design major at the Art Institute of California said the video reminded her not only about how she’s watched them grow up, but the fact that how she’s grown up as well. “I went from this young kid who didn’t care about much to caring about this band and these people so much that I couldn’t picture my life without them.”
She went on to say, “I went from being bullied for years because I liked them to realizing who my true friends are. I have them to thank for everything that’s happened in my life and everyone who’s still here.”
Emmet Wright, 18-year-old fashion business student at the London College of Fashion said that the video showed him how much they four have grown up and are at a point in their life where they should go their own ways. Wright said, “In the past few months I’ve met so many wonderful people through going to their shows and trying to meet them. Almost everyone I talk to now, I know through One Direction.”
Through the transitions in Wright’s life, One Direction has stayed a constant part of his life. “They’ve really helped me adjust to my new life away from home and at my new school. They have all made me feel so special at their shows and memories of their tour will always be something I will always remember.”
For me, this video reminds me of the past five years I’ve spent with this band. From being a 15-year-old girl who was trying to fit in, to being a newly 20-year-old with the greatest group of friends in the world, I owe a lot of who I am today to the band that I’ve grown up with.
So here’s to you, One Direction. We sure do have a whole lot of history.
