USWNT Looking For a Win in the Courtroom
Women’s National team suing U.S. Soccer federation for equal pay
The United States Women’s National Soccer team are fresh off their Olympic qualification, and have taken a stand on a major social issue as five of their biggest stars have accused the U.S. Soccer Federation for unequal pay. Alex Morgan, Carli Llyod, Megan Rapinoe, Becky Sauerbrunn, and Hope Solo have all filed a claim with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
In a statement released on Thursday by the legal representatives of the USWNT said that the USWNT make four-times less than their male counter parts on the men’ national team. Even though, the USMNT have three World Cups and four gold medals in the Olympics.
Paige Rios, 2o-years-old, Women’s Mt.SAC Soccer player, said it pissed her off because women are supposed to be at a point in society where they are not to be treated lesser than men.
“ A woman is the leading candidate is the Democratic nomination, for a seat in the oval office, yet we still have these gaps in pay in our female professional athletes as compared to the male professional athletes,” said Rios.

Despite, the lopsided success in favor of the Women’s National team over the Men’s team, the top women players on the team will still only get paid $72,000 year by soccer federation to play a minimum of 20 games this year. That will equal about $3,600 per game assuming the UWNT only play 20 games. Not to mention, the disproportional gap in compensation bonus for making the world cup is $30,000 for women, while the men receive about $68,000.
However, this is not the USMNT’s first discontent of feeling discriminated against as they protested playing in last year’s Women’s World Cup on artificial surfaces. They continued to voice their displeasure as they decided to cancel a friendly match in Hawaii against Trinidad and Tobago due to poor field conditions back in December. The field conditions were so atrocious that player found pieces of plastic mixed in with the rubber on the turf, were able lift up the turf itself, and not to mention that star midfielder Megan Rapinoe was lost with an ACL tare in a training session.
UPDATE: The U.S. Soccer Federation have released a statement that reads;
The EEOC will continue its investigation on the claim filed by the USWNT as the team prepares to defend its title in the Rio Summer Olympic.
