Jesus said in his sermon on the Mount “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.” When I was meditating on this word of God. I had a question in my mind.

What does it mean? What did he mean by being meek?

The dictionary says the meekness as— quiet, gentle, and easily imposed on; submissive. Isn't it an undesirable quality? Does being meek become a weakness for us? Was this what Jesus meant?

Let's drill deep into the meaning of meekness.

Did you know? Jesus was quoting a verse from Psalms of David. We can find this in Psalms 37.

Jesus always quotes from the word itself. Many of his speeches have references from the Old Testament directly or indirectly….

He states it explicitly,

“Think not that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets; I have come not to abolish them but to fulfill them”. (Mathew 5:17)

In Psalms 37, you’ll get a deeper understanding of the word “Meekness” and the qualities that a person should possess to be “Meek”.

It gives a completely different perspective that what we think. Meekness is staying calm in difficult times by being in prayer and expecting the works of God.

Let's have a detailed look at the verses.

According to Psalms 37, the quality of meekness can be described as a culmination of the following traits.

1. Trust in the Lord.

1 Fret not yourself because of the wicked,
be not envious of wrongdoers!
2 For they will soon fade like the grass,
and wither like the green herb.

3 Trust in the Lord, and do good;
so you will dwell in the land, and enjoy security.

When we are in the midst of problems, we might think “I am someone who believes in God..! but why am I not getting immediate help from God…?

Look at others around me, those who don't believe in God have no problems…they are doing well…and the ones who believe in him are suffering from problems ….

But the word of God tells us “To trust him and do good”.

Don't look at others. Because when you are walking in the path of God, he is the one who guides you. He wants to train you to walk in his footsteps. He wants to sanctify you…So you are different from others those who don't know him or believe in him. You are being trained in a controlled and careful manner.

2. Delight in the Lord

4 Take delight in the Lord,
and he will give you the desires of your heart.

5 Commit your way to the Lord;
trust in him, and he will act.
6 He will bring forth your vindication as the light,
and your right as the noonday.

We should be able to be happy in the Lord. Even amid pressing problems, we should be able to rejoice in the Lord by faith. We should believe that he can solve every problem that we face.

We should be able to foresee the wonderful works and miracles he's going to perform for you. That faith will let you rejoice in him.

3. Wait, be calm, and Patient

7 Be still before the Lord, and wait patiently for him;
fret not yourself over him who prospers in his way,
over the man who carries out evil devices!

We need to be patient. God has a time for everything. It's often not as fast as we might expect.

Wait for His time not your time

We must make it fast, with our faith.

4. Refrain from anger

8 Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath!
Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil.
9 For the wicked shall be cut off;
but those who wait for the Lord shall possess the land.

10 Yet a little while, and the wicked will be no more;
though you look well at his place, he will not be there.
11 But the meek shall possess the land,
and delight themselves in abundant prosperity.

When things are not going as we expected and adversities are at their peak, often we lose our cool.

The pride inside our hearts will emerge as anger. But we have to control it. we have to acknowledge that, we are nothing…we are not entitled to live a problem-free life as we are sinners.

We have to humble ourselves before God. In the middle of adversities, we must be able to hold strong like Job,

“In all this Job did not sin with his lips”( Job 2:10)

Conclusion.

By following the word of God, by being calm, patient, and without being angry, wait for the time of God by trusting Him and delighting in him. It makes us “Meek” and blessed, fulfilling Jesus’ promise to inherit the earth.
