Must like long walks on beaches, global domination and have a good sense of humour.

The Long Version

Before we begin, let me say that this is by far the strangest help wanted advert I have ever written (and I’ve written a few).

I would imagine there aren’t many founders that get to recruit somebody to take half of their job… but wait. I’m getting ahead of myself.

Birthdays and Reflections

This week SafeStack marks its third birthday. We have grown considerably since our start and now have a suite of products and services to help serve fast growing and fast moving organisations secure their world.

We are:

  • A global advisory practice serving 70 clients in 7 countries.
  • A security education platform, SafeStack OnDemand, serving security awareness education in a scalable and affordable way.
  • A classroom based training practice teaching 700 students in 3 years.
  • Dfend (https://dfend.io), a SaaS product designed to help you See More. Know More. Do Less by automating the tedious security tasks you need to stay ahead of cyber threats
  • A profitable bootstrapped company employing 10 staff and returning consistent year on year growth.

We are working hard to become a leading organisation for securing innovative organisations.

SafeStack has grown into a product company and an advisory/training services business.

As you can see from that list however, we aren’t really one company, we are two. While these two “companies” have lived side by side for 3 years, keeping things this way will limit the potential of both.

It’s time for our next stage

In order to grow, we need to make some changes… I need to make some changes.

This is not a job advert for someone to work for me.

This is a job advert for someone to work with me.

I am looking for a business partner, CEO and co-founder.

I have been leading SafeStack as the sole founder and CEO since day one. This has been an incredible journey and I have loved watching SafeStack grow. We have done so much despite our small beginnings.

Should you include an animated gif when hiring a CEO? We shall find out…

I am proud that I have been able to lead SafeStack alone so far. This company has become so much more than I would have ever imagined.

The time has come however to acknowledge that my companies needs are changing.

Sometimes being the best leader for an organisation means stepping to the side to make room for someone else.

SafeStack needs the sort of global experience and drive that can take our ideas and products and grow them from their early stages to reach their full potential.

Someone to be the CEO our product company needs, allowing me to be the CEO that our advisory and training company deserves.

About you

You have experience running and growing a successful global software as a service company.

You are based in New Zealand, USA or Australia.

You understand funding in early stage companies and have had success pursuing funding or collaboration options.

You can sell things… globally…. without resorting to fear.

You are results focused, confident and driven.

You are an excellent communicator.

You can run a lean ship. You can make every dollar count.

You know how to monitor, manage and assess the growth of a company and communicate this to stakeholders such as a board or executive teams.

You know why cyber security is a global issue and want to be involved in fixing it.

You appreciate workflow automation and data driven decisions.

You are a hands on, pragmatic person that will get stuck in.

You like to go fast.

You appreciate simplicity over complexity.

You fail fast, learn from it and avoiding past mistakes.

You have a life outside of technology.

You would like to work with a New Zealand company.

About us

We are 10 people based in Auckland, New Zealand. We are an advisory, training and Software as a Service (SaaS) company but as you will have gathered from this advert, this is changing now we’ve grown.

The SafeStack team at work

We are based in a charming “second-hand chic” office on High Street. We will never own a ping pong table, ever (but we do now own an oscilloscope and a tambourine).

We are a mix of developers, trainers and consultants and often work across roles and help each other out.

We like working together, funny gifs, cheesy TV shows, the ocean, tweed, bass guitars, board games, cats, comic books, video games, family time, hats, movies, good food and a million things in between.

It has been less than 2 days since our last screw up. We will screw up again soon, but we believe in failure and blameless culture.

We try (really hard) to work no more than 37 hours a week, encourage good healthy habits and make work a nice place to come to. We share our practices openly and support each other.

We build our own tools where we have to, we use other peoples tools where we can.

We value community and collaboration and believe we are stronger when we work together.

We are happy to accommodate part-time or altered working patterns if you have other important things in your life like a family or outside commitments.

Does this sound like you?

So if you read all the way down here and think this could be you. I would love to talk to you.

We especially welcome applicants that make us more diverse, whether that be gender, religion, ethnic origin, age, physical ability or any other factor I will have forgotten to list here.

Stage one of the recruitment process is filling out a quiz on the amazing Weirdly platform.

Click to complete the application quiz

One last thing…

This will be a hard role to fill. It’s not everyday you hire a CEO for part of your own company…

If you have any questions before you complete the application quiz, drop me an email to laura@safestack.io.

I won’t reply to recruitment agencies or outsource companies. I don’t like generic emails and if you get my name or gender wrong it will make me sad.

We would rather have an empty seat than the wrong person in it.
