The collaboration will accelerate the development and adoption of appchains as a dominant scaling solution for Web3

MULTIVERSE, February 1, 2023 — Saga and Polygon announced today that they have entered into a partnership where the Saga protocol will automate the instantiation of Supernets, Polygon’s appchain solution.

Supernets, developed by Polygon Edge, allows a project to spin up an appchain using their chosen subset of Polygon validators, while still using the MATIC token to secure the chain. Historically, the instantiation of a Supernet can be a significant undertaking because of its manual nature. The automation of Supernets will significantly increase adoption and allow Polygon projects to access their own dedicated blockspace with a fraction of the time and effort. This collaboration marks a significant effort in Web3 to remove barriers to entry for developers building on appchains and therefore scale their usage.

On Saga, any project can choose to automatically deploy a dedicated blockchain, or Chainlet, using a shared set of validators with guaranteed operational commitments from those validators. A project deploying a Supernet blockchain on Polygon can choose the Polygon Edge Chainlet stack on Saga and then deploy to their MATIC validators.

An individual Chainlet’s security is shared with their MATIC validator pool via interchain security. Any malicious behavior observed on a Chainlet may result in the perpetrating validator being penalized by seizure of a portion of their managed stake in the corresponding MATIC validator pool.

All Polygon Edge Chainlets will be maintained by a MATIC validator pool in exchange for a recurring Chainlet fee payment (denominated in SAGA tokens), where the payer of the recurring fee may be the project or Polygon.

One method by which we can achieve the coordination required to ensure the above functionality is Cosmos Interchain Blockchain Communication (IBC). For example, one possible scenario is that a MATIC validator pool will use IBC to coordinate with the Saga Platform Chain, and the Saga Platform Chain will use IBC to coordinate with all Polygon Edge Chainlets. Other scenarios are also being actively explored at this time.

In terms of immediate use cases, both Saga and Polygon currently focus heavily on gaming and entertainment. Both require performance improvements and cost savings compared to traditional blockchain architecture, and this collaboration is a significant step towards achieving those goals.

Saga and Polygon will collaborate to deliver the following:

● Blockchain projects of any size and stage can launch dedicated Polygon Edge blockchains

● Both Polygon validators and Polygon delegators will receive staking and inflation rewards for participating

● Launched Polygon Edge blockchains will be secured with a shared pool of staked MATIC

● Polygon Edge blockchains will be enabled with blockchain to blockchain communication, i.e. IBC

Polygon is the leading Web3 infrastructure used by some of the world’s biggest companies . It began the Polygon Edge effort two years ago to offer the Supernets appchain solution, which has since been deployed across approximately 300 projects.

Saga is a Web3 scalability protocol that empowers developers to build applications on dedicated chains, or Chainlets. There are currently over 120 projects building on Saga. Its infrastructure ensures high throughput, easy upgradability, congestion relief, and no dependencies on other applications using Saga. In addition, gas fees for infrastructure remain predictable and are by default hidden from the end user, allowing developers to use any token or currency for their applications.

The automated deployment of dedicated blockspace is secured via interchain security. Because Saga is also generally capable of deploying any technology as a service that implements consumer-side interchain security, it can also be used to stand up and scale other appchain solutions in an automated fashion.

About Saga

Saga is a Web3 scalability protocol for automated deployment of application-specific blockchains in gaming, entertainment and DeFi. Through its platform, it aims to empower developers to build the next 1000 chains in the multiverse.

About Polygon

Polygon is the leading blockchain development platform, offering scalable, affordable, secure, and sustainable blockchains for Web3. Its growing suite of products offers developers easy access to major scaling solutions including L2 (ZK Rollups and Optimistic Rollups), sidechains, hybrid, stand-alone and enterprise chains, and data availability. Scaling solutions that Polygon Labs initially developed have seen widespread adoption with tens of thousands of decentralized apps, unique addresses exceeding unique addresses exceeding 211 million, over 1.12 million smart contracts created and 2.36 billion total transactions processed since inception. Polygon is carbon neutral with the goal of leading the Web3 ecosystem in becoming carbon negative.
