Birdwatching? Not For Me, Please, But…

A simple reminder that our subjective perceptions of the same objective reality can be vastly different

A couple of weeks ago, my husband David and I went on a trip to the southern shore of Lake Erie, specifically to Magee Marsh. Since there are no lodging options in the Magee Marsh area, we booked a few nights in the city of Huron, about a 40-minute drive from Magee Marsh.

Sounds exciting, eh? Well, David is a birder, and since Magee Marsh is considered to be the birdwatching “mecca,” it was the place to go at this time of year, which is the peak of the bird migration season.

David has been to Magee Marsh many times, and he has always raved about it, while for me, it was the first time ever. I’m not into birdwatching, not at all, but I decided to join him out of curiosity. After all, it was a short 3-day trip, a relatively short driving distance, so what could go wrong? — I thought. So, we went together.

We had a nice time. We stayed at a lovely, inexpensive hotel overlooking the lake, did some hiking in the area — I love hiking! — enjoyed freshly caught freshly cooked perch at a historic fishermen’s restaurant while sitting on a lovely sunny patio overlooking the lake, visited with David’s ex-coworker and his wife who live in the…
