We Need to Radically Overhaul Self-Care. Here Is How

Ever since there has been a push to speak about mental illnesses, there has been talk about how to deal with it. It’s culminated in a lot of good things, such as people recognizing signs of ADHD, autism, or neurodivergent tendencies and overall an uptick in seeking therapists.

But it’s also cultivated a lot of problems.

The influx of people has resulted in a shortage of therapists to address the demands. This issue has been “solved” by two primary “solutions”:

  • The rise of for-profit companies aimed at providing therapy care;
  • And the uptick of a certain way of thinking.

The former is problematic in several ways as these companies use AI and bots to provide “personalized care” when this can be harmful and useless at best. The last thing you want is an AI chatbot to suddenly tell you to off yourself in the middle of a session.

But the latter I believe is more damaging as this has led to the rise of people suggesting we do a little “self-care” for ourselves.
