Top 5 Things to do in the Lake District

The Lake District is a national park in northwest England. This beautiful little treasure box filled with portly mountains and gleaming little lakes. Also some of the sweetest little market towns hiding amongst these hills.

This part of the country has always been on our bucket list since we moved to England and finally we had the opportunity to spend three days here.

Here are my five favorite activities in the Lake District — all tried and tested :)

1. Climb Helvellyn

This hike takes approximately five and a half hours. The walk on Helvellyn’s striding edge is only recommended to a more advanced hiker, but it is well worth the exhausting walk up to the top because in return you get the most breathtaking views of Ullswater.

2. Shop ’til you drop in Keswick

If there’s a perfectly idyllic small town, it must be Keswick. This beautiful market town is ideal for tired hikers with its many pubs, coffee shops, and gelato parlors. It’s the perfect place if your four-legged friend accompanied you because almost every single restaurant and shop welcomes dogs (in some of them you can even get a special treat for your pup)

3. Visit Ashness Bridge

Although there is no extraordinary history behind this bridge neither it is an uber popular tourist destination (to be honest, it is quite hard to find), but no trip to the Lake District would be complete without visiting this traditional stone-built bridge. Ashness Bridge is located on a single-track road from the Borrowdale road to Watendlath in Keswick.

4. Walk up to the Gummers How

This hike is the easier/quicker option for those who don’t want to (or don’t have the time to) climb the Helvellyn. The walk is roughly two hours. Located in a perfect scenery, so I can guarantee you will enjoy every single minute of it — unless if it’s raining. Which is quite likely in the Lake District — but even then — you will be amazed by the truly breathtaking views.

And If you are lucky you might get to meet some of the locals like we did: :)

5. Row, row, row your boat, gently down Derwent Water

But seriously. Go and relive your childhood memories or make some new, unforgettable ones. Or just mimic the romantic boat scene from (well from pretty much any romantic movie really). You can rent your own boat or just ride a ferry — less physical exercise but during the summer it can get really crowded.

Whatever you do in the Lake District get ready to be amazed. I am sure there is twice as many things that you can do and see but unfortunately, we only had time to visit the places mentioned above.

Have you been in the Lake District? Can you recommend any other places worth visiting? If yes please leave a comment below!

If you have any questions — for example name or address of any pubs, camp sites or hotels that we been to — Please do not hesitate to contact me. I am happy to answer any questions you may have. xx

Come sail away with me!
