While it may seem like many college graduates are simply glad to be done with school when the time comes, the real fact of the matter is that graduation is really just the beginning of these students’ worries. Whether it’s finding a job or paying off their massive student debts, many students are finding it difficult to keep their heads above water once they’re done with school.

Here are some thoughts from students and a university professor when asked: “What is the biggest challenge for college graduates when school ends?”

Chienell Coleman, 22
Biology major, Salem State University
“Going into debt just to get a higher education so you can find a job in your field and specialize. The debt-to-income ratio is a big struggle.”

Ashley Santacroce, 23
Human Development and Family Studies major, University of New Hampshire
“Being able to support yourself financially in graduate school or even in employment because of massive student loans.”

Vaye Karzon, 24
Nuclear Medicine Technology major, Salem State University
“Paying back student loans is the hardest part, but finding a job in your field is just as hard.”

Dr. Jamie J. Wilson
Professor of History, Salem State University
“Fnding a job is by far the biggest hurdle for a lot of these students. We train these kids in college to be ‘productive members of society,’ but then they have trouble finding work with the skills they emerge from school with. Then, that rolls downhill and contributes to the financial struggles as well.”
