It is said that the film La La Land has made history by breaking the record of winning all of the Golden Globes for which it was nominated. The movie won seven Golden Globes and has been nominated for 14 Academy Awards. It has tied with Titanic for the most nominated film.

After its impressive track record and charming star-studded cast, I really wanted to see it — and the fact that it was a musical was an extra bonus. So I did. I went last Friday and it was probably the most enjoyable film I have seen in a long time — which says a lot because I’m at the movies at least once a week.

I was emotionally invested from beginning to end. The moment the people in traffic on a Los Angeles freeway began to sing and dance to the confusion and wonder the ending had left me. Now, I’m not here to spoil the movie because I do want you to see it, but I will be giving a brief synopsis.

This movie was incredible because the dual meaning of La La Land is appropriately represented in the story. It’s like the writers were given this noun and managed to define it while creating a story to explain it.

What I mean is that La La Land is the nickname of Los Angeles, where the story takes place. The story is of a woman and man in modern day 2016, which are old fashioned at heart. They share the same ambition and have goals they plan to achieve. Mia, portrayed by Emma Stone, is an aspiring actress and Sebastian, Ryan Gosling’s character, is an aspiring jazz pianist. They fall in love and support each other but their heads are in La La Land — the state of daydreaming.

As the story progresses, they both get caught up in their dreams and it challenges the couple. Without spoiling the ending, I do have to say I wish it was different. However, I do understand why the writers ended it that way. It gives a different glimpse of La La Land.

So go see La La Land, and like their commercial says, “If you’ve already seen it, see it again.”
