How to Reach Your Goals Amid Chaos

There’s a lot of chaos going on in the world right now. And I hate to break it to you, but it’s not going to get better anytime soon. In fact, I think it’s going to get worse before it gets better.

So we all have a choice to make. Do we let chaos rule us? Or do we succeed in spite of it?

Here’s a story I don’t think I’ve shared before because I’m not particularly proud of my behavior when it happened, but there’s a good lesson here.

It was in 2000 when I was working on my first multimedia product (a CD). I figured out all the mechanics on how to do that from scratch. Not an easy thing at the time. I now had to create the sales letter for it. I somehow knew this was what was going to change everything for me.

At that time I was living in a trailer and making $1,500 / mo at my job. I had no money and we were fresh out of bankruptcy. But I was going to get a percentage on the sale of this CD I was creating for my boss. So I knew I had to get this done.

So there I was struggling to write this sales letter, working from home on it for hours and hours, and suddenly the power went out. I lost all that I had worked on that day. I hadn’t saved it. Someone had literally cut the power line leading to my trailer by mistake!

I lost it.

This is the part that I’m not proud of. I came flying out of the trailer and don’t even remember what I was saying, but I know it was pretty incoherent. The guys who cut the power line were so scared that they ran to their truck and drove away, leaving all their equipment behind. I called my wife at work (she worked for the police department at the time). I was so freaked out she couldn’t even recognize my voice. She kept saying, “Sir, you need to calm down, sir, you need to calm down.”

That’s how NOT to handle chaos.

When I calmed down about an hour later, I found a way to get power to my computer. I was able to recover what I had lost and finish that sales letter. That sales letter went on to make my boss $100,000 a month in sales.

While you shouldn’t freak out like I did, there is something I did do that made it work out in the end — focus.

I was so focused on getting that sales letter done, that I didn’t let anything stop me. I knew I had to stay focused long enough to get the results I was after.

So when there’s chaos going on around you, when there’s political strife, when their financial problems, when there’s relationship problems, whatever your goal is, you need to stay laser focused on it at all times, while balancing everything else.

You need to figure out how to reach your goals, and maintain your relationships at the same time. You do what it takes, whether that means going to bed a little later, getting up a little earlier, whatever you need to do. There were times when I was getting up at 3:30 in the morning to work on stuff in order to make it happen.

So when chaos seems to be ruling, just choose to not participate in it. Stay focused. Stay on target. stay balanced. Stay on purpose and keep taking action towards your goal every day.

That’s how you reach your goals no matter what.
