Salesforce Joins The Open Compute Project
For 19 years, Salesforce has delivered reliable, trusted, and innovative technology to help our customers drive success in their own businesses. Along the way we’ve learned a lot about building on top of raw compute resources and scaling our infrastructure; after all, underneath our cloud-based services, we run a lot of real servers, networks, disks, and other physical infrastructure!
Today we are excited to announce that Salesforce is joining the Open Compute Project (OCP) to share our learnings and collaborate to build a more open foundation for computing resources.
The OCP provides us with a great opportunity to share what we’re learning as we build and scale our infrastructure. For instance, through extensive testing, we learned how to effectively monitor the health of hundreds of different hardware components. Sharing these findings with the OCP community helps us focus on product innovation instead of low-level hardware interoperability challenges.
Salesforce is an active participant in the open source community. We’re longtime code contributors and members of several industry groups like the TODO group. Our participation is a two-way street. Our contributions to the OCP will help build the software and hardware components that power our infrastructure. In return, we’re able to put more focus on reliably delivering innovative features three times per year. Chief Infrastructure Officer Randy Kern sums it up nicely:
“Joining the OCP enables us to collaborate with our peers to build a more open and standard compute foundation. This open foundation is critical for us to continue innovating and delivering a reliable service.” ~ Randy Kern, Chief Infrastructure Officer, Salesforce
We look forward to participating in the OCP community and helping further the open platforms we build on.
