Elena Migunova and Michelle Veneracion believe that human-centered design and collaboration should inform every part of the design process. They persistently remind people that design is more than making things look pretty.

Elena and Michelle will be leading the interactive workshop Design User-centric Analytics Dashboards at TDX, the annual Salesforce event for anyone developing or designing on the platform. Learn how to create experiences that build trust, usability and adoption. Register now!

Salesforce Design (SD): How did you get into design?

Elena Migunova (EM): I grew up in a family of artists and I’ve always been fascinated by everything creative.

Michelle Veneracion (MV): My traditional art background led me to print and graphic design. To this day, I continue to learn from my managers, my peers, and most importantly our customers.

SD: What do you wish more people appreciated about the value of design?

EM: Great design is a complex skill because it’s a combination of empathy, creativity, and problem-solving. It‘s’ so much more than just “making things pretty,” although that’s important as well.

MV: I wish that more people appreciated not just the beauty of design but the process of design and problem solving. Along with “making things look pretty,” the process of making the experience seamless and natural should also be valued as good design.

SD: In the simplest terms, what’s the focus of your TDX session?

EM: User experience for analytics dashboards.

MV: Design thinking for non-designers.

SD: What key points do you hope audiences will get from your TDX session and why is that important to you?

EM: Become a design hero by using the right tools to apply relationship design principles to your dashboards. We’ll learn about the design thinking process and best practices. These lessons are super important because they help you create a product that fosters a professional and seamless user experience.

SD: How do you think this will help people do their work better or collaborate better?

MV: Our TDX session will help teams understand the value of collaboration and feedback (read about virtual design reviews). We’ll share collaborative methods for generating ideas through hands-on activities, and help teams work together to prioritize these ideas.

SD: How has design helped you build relationships with customers, co-workers, or communities?

MV: Design has allowed me to become even more empathetic to our customers, co-workers, and communities. As I build my relationships with each group, I learn more about their pain points, processes, and experiences. I’ve learned to be an active listener and an advocate for those who speak up about the pain points they experience while using our products.

EM: I’ve been sharing my design knowledge and skills with customers and the Salesforce community for the past five years. It’s been fulfilling to see so many new design Trailblazers emerging.

SD: What do you love about being a designer at Salesforce?

EM: I love how close we are to the customers! Innovation is always a theme and I love working on future-looking projects.

MV: I love building relationships with every single person I meet. I love reaching out to customers to understand the work they do and how we can support them. I love the amazing team I work with including the managers who support us.
