2.2 The Rise, Fall and Overhaul of International

What were some of the key factors marking International Harvester’s early success? What became of those factors when the company gambled and lost? What role did those same factors play in the company’s struggle to reinvent itself? In answering these questions, we draw attention to how the roles played by some of those factors vary considerably across time while others remain relatively unchanged. In doing so, we find ourselves — quite unexpectedly — in a position to ask again and answer anew a pressing question: “How can a voluptuous emotion be reduced to a commodified object and thereby become, in our era of excessive industrialization, a factor in the economy?” When the “industrial regime” takes the form of a family business, it tends to blur and soften the otherwise hard and determinant lines between “the domestic sphere and a system of laws based on the family unit,” and thereby reveal a profound connection between “the various forms of voluptuous emotion” and “the anthropomorphic phenomenon of economy and exchange.”⁷
