Back to reality
After the break comes the return to normal life
It’s been a refreshing two week break but it’s back to work for me today. I feel ready to get back into the swing of things though and I’m glad to be back home, as well as looking forward to seeing the friends we’ve missed while away.
Inevitably, after time away, it’s tempting to come back with bold ambitions about how we’re going to live a more restful life. Sadly, it never takes long before the everyday realities of life quickly wipe out those flickers of hope.
So my aim is to resist any dramatic changes and simply to continue with the gradual life trajectory to a more rest-fueled life I’ve been on for a while now.
Particularly, I’m keen, as much as is possible, to create one day a week that is significantly different from the rest of the week. It’s hard to do this when life is 24/7 but this last year has highlighted how much I need this — not just physically, but spiritually and emotionally too.
I do want to keep going with my summer of fiction too. Especially as I didn’t get nearly as much reading done on holiday as I’d hoped. I continue to forget that holidays with young kids are rarely opportunities for extended reading! So it's back to reading on the bus to work each day, still with a focus on fiction rather than books to learn from.
Writing routine
Now that I’m back into my usual home routine, I’m hoping to be a little more adventurous with my writing. Writing every day while on holiday hasn’t been nearly as easy due to each day being unpredictable. I’m glad I kept going though—I’m just looking forward to having a regular writing routine again. (Though I do fear I may be extremely distracted by the Olympics over the next few weeks!)
Anyway, it’s good to be back. I’m feeling positive about the future and looking forward to exploring more with my writing in the coming weeks. I’ve no idea what that will look like—I just know I want to try something different!
