November seems to be pretty quiet, but I may just be unaware of what might be going on. Send me an email if you know of something. There are quite a few exhibitions on last month’s post that won’t close until January or later, so do give that listing a look.

Edit 2018 November 8: Added a few shows. And moved some annoying whiny writing to the bottom of the post.

[edit 11/5/2018: You apparently can’t see this at the moment…see edit above for details. IDK, give it a shot. Maybe it will be reinstalled by the time you get there.]

This show was beautifully curated, and takes up both the downstairs Booth Gallery area, as well as upstairs. Alas, I don’t know what exhibition might be coming up after this one. The show is very briefly described as “A celebration of contemporary dark surrealism.” The term “surrealism” is a complex one, which usually gets pinned strictly to the movement from the early 1900s by the academics. It certainly feels nice when used for this oeuvre of dark artwork, though. Descriptive terms are so difficult to find.

Not sure why this show isn’t listed on the gallery’s Exhibition Calendar. Maybe because it’s only up for a weekend in a pop-up space.

Edit 11/5/2018: Seems I’m not up on what’s going on because the galleries I check in on aren’t making announcements. Curious… Spoke Art did not post their Isle of Dogs show on their Exhibition Calendar until I asked them to do so. The show was further excluded from their subsequent email newsletter “Get a sneak peek at our November exhibitions!” There is a blog post for it tucked down on the bottom of their website’s front page, and their event listing for the event is lost in the main Spoke Art Facebook page rather than in the NY location’s page. Nope…it’s not been posted on their Instagram at all. Last Rites also apparently has a new show that just went up, but that is utterly absent from their website, email announcements, and social media. The show has only been posted on the artist’s Instagram page, and has its own website. The collection of work is by photographer Sylvia Makris, and is collectively titled Thou Art Darkest. It’s beautiful. I wish I could tell you how long it will be up; if the artist answers that question I posted on her Instagram page, I’ll update this post. Besides the fact that it wasn’t announced, it’s pretty crappy that the 13th Hour exhibition is supposed to be on view until next week. Not sure where the artwork from that show is while the Makris show is up. Sucks for viewers who want to go to see it, and for the artists whose hard work should be up on those walls. Also have no clue what is going on after the 13th Hour as the website doesn’t mention anything. Maybe there are details I’m not aware of, here, but this is just annoying. No wonder we all miss art shows all the time.
