September in New York is when the art scene explodes. On Thursday evening following Labor Day, galleries in Chelsea open exhibitions by their super star artists, and the streets become crowded with art lovers, as well as those seeking free, cheap wine. Beyond that madness, there are lots of good shows up for the month. Here are a few:

Closing Soon

Heavenly Bodies {archived} at the Met’s main location and at the Cloisters is going to close on October 8th.
Whitney | David Wojnarowicz: History Keeps Me Awake at Night {archived} at the Whitney closes on September 30th, while his exhibition at P.P.O.W. (Soon All This Will be Picturesque Ruins: The Installations of David Wojnarowicz {archived})closes on August 24th.
Phobos and Deimos {archived} at Gristle closes on September 1st.
The Moleskine Project Group Show {archived} at Spoke art closes on August 25th.

I wish I’d known earlier about the opening of There Is Only One Of You — Photographs by Walter Wlodarczyk at Secret Project Robot. Instead, shots of the opening accompanied by lots of comments about how great it is, popped up on social networking in the days following. It’s up through to the end of August, so there’s that.

Governors Island Art Fair — 11th Annual {archived}

Organized by the Nonprofit 4heads, Inc.
Starting September 1, 2018
Open every Saturday and Sunday through September 30.

Installation at the Governors Island Art Fair, Governors Island, New York City, September 2017. Found objects with furniture, paper, fabric, other, dimensions variable.

Allison Sommers will again have a room. The art installations last year were mind blowing. Don’t miss this!

On September 1, 2018, 4heads will open the Governors Island Art Fair (GIAF), featuring a diverse range of artists from across the U.S. and abroad. Installations, which span the spectrum of artistic genre and media, will be presented across eight of the historic homes on Colonels Row, with each artist installing in an individual room or connective space. Now in its 11th year, GIAF heralds the start of the fall visual arts season in New York, with a spirited atmosphere that encourages conversation between artists and visitors and challenges the established fair paradigm as one exclusively for art connoisseurs. GIAF will be open every Saturday and Sunday through September 30.

GIAF, which first launched in 2008, was among the first major art events to take place on Governors Island. As interest in the Island as a cultural destination has grown, in particular over the last several years, 4heads has remained steadfast in maintaining its presence, continuing to provide working artists with a place to show new and recent work and to build their network of support — both among peers and the public. Each year, GIAF presents the work of up to 100 artists, selected through an open call and jurying process. For the 2018 edition, as with previous iterations, each artist will be given a full room — free of charge — to create an immersive installation or micro-exhibition, allowing their artists more space to highlight their distinct approaches and techniques.

Ladies Ladies Art Show 2018 is the 5th installment of this exclusive group art show, featuring tattoo art by some of the most talented female tattooers from NYC and around the world.

The event was born as a platform to show the diversity of art in the feminine universe of professional tattooing. The tattoo scene has been historically a male dominated playground, but in the last 30 yrs or so, the number of women in the tattooing industry has grown exponentially and like never before.Tattooing itself has gone from being a subculture practice to a widespread cultural/social phenomenon. As the number of people getting tattooed has grown, so has the massive presence of many talented women choosing tattooing as their professional career and their creative voice!

This exhibit brings together female tattoo artists from different parts of the world, with different styles and backgrounds, carefully chosen to offer a representation of what the contemporary tattoo industry has to offer. It also aims to fill the gap between the old and the new generations of female tattooers, showcasing work from seasoned professionals to newer tattoo artists.

NY Art Book Fair | MoMA PS1 | Printed Matter {archived}

September 21–23, 2018
Preview: Thursday, September 20, 6–9pm

OK, so this event can get crowded {archived}. If you’re an introvert, like me, prepare yourself. There are always really amazing things to see (amidst mediocre things, alas), but it’s a wonderful event that promotes a wonderful art medium.
