Hashtag activism proves its value

Some people call social campaigns like the Ice Bucket Challenge a form of “slacktivism”, claiming they may raise awareness temporarily but don’t make a lasting difference in the causes they champion. A recent report in Science Magazine shows people shouldn’t be so quick to throw cold water on such efforts. The research funded by last year’s Ice Bucket Challenge has already led to a deeper understanding of ALS and is helping to identify new biomarkers and therapeutic strategies for the disease.
